Once you've got your new iPhone 3G, you'll need to connect to the latest version of iTunes to activate it.
Before Activating
1. Check your voicemail
Before you activate your iPhone, make sure you listen to your current voicemails. If you're an existing O2 customer, activation will delete your existing voicemails. If you're transferring an existing number from another network operator, existing voicemails will not be transferred.
2. Transfer your contacts, music and photos
Before you activate, migrate your existing mobile contacts onto Outlook, Outlook Express on the PC, or Address Book or Entourage on the Mac.
To activate your iPhone 3G
Insert your SIM card into your iPhone 3G. You'll need to use the SIM ejector tool, found inside your black user guide in the box.
If you’ve bought a Pay & Go iPhone, you’ll need to use the new SIM card to get the 12 months unlimited browsing and Wi-Fi access
Upgrading iPhone customers will not require a new SIM and should just use your current one.
Upgrading O2 customers who don’t currently have an iPhone will need to check whether your current SIM is 3G. To do this, check the last 4 digits on the back of your SIM for the letters 3G. If it isn’t there, you’ll need to get a new 3G SIM from an O2 store or Carphone Warehouse store. They’ll be able to transfer all your existing services onto the new SIM. You can continue to use your current SIM in your new iPhone you just won’t be able to make use of the 3G connection speeds.
Download and install the latest version of iTunes.
Connect iPhone to a USB 2.0 port on your Mac or PC (not on the keyboard) using the included cable. iTunes opens automatically.
Follow the onscreen instructions in iTunes to activate iPhone 3G and sync your contacts, calendars, music, photos, podcasts, videos, email accounts, and web bookmarks.
If you're new to O2 or billed by Carphone Warehouse and transferring your existing number, contact us with your PAC code if you've not done so already.
Using iPhone with an O2 Pay & Go SIM card
Your iPhone is automatically set to Pay Monthly, so once you've activated the iPhone you'll need to change the settings to Pay & Go to get the things like mobile internet to work.
If you’re already with O2 Pay & Go, you can easily transfer your existing number and balance to your new iPhone SIM by completing this form.
