Walkman.

Originally the portable tape player we all remember, the Walkman name has now been applied to some Sony Ericsson phones that can play MP3s.

WAP.

WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) is a way for mobile devices to access the internet, via specially created WAP sites. WAP sites are optimised for mobile devices, and so are generally text based and designed to fit small screens. Note that a WAP device isn't necessarily able to access the world wide web, and so you won't be able to see exactly the same sites on a WAP phone as you can on your PC.

WAV.

A wav file is a high quality audio file. Unlike MP3 files, wav files are not compressed. This means that they can maintain a high quality, but are also significantly larger in size than the equivalent length of audio in MP3 format.

Wi-Fi.

Short for 'wireless fidelity'. A term for certain types of wireless local area networks (WLAN) that use specifications conforming to IEEE 802.11b. Wi-Fi has gained acceptance in many environments as an alternative to a wired LAN. Many airports, hotels, and other services offer public access to Wi-Fi networks so people can log onto the Internet and receive emails on the move. These locations are known as hotspots.

Windows Media.

Windows Media is a type of file format created by Microsoft for audio and video files. Windows Media Player is designed to play Windows Media files, but can also play MP3 audio and MPEG video.
